Demonstration Sites

The Building with Mission team worked with three demonstration sites, all in the early stages of exploring a housing project for seniors, to help them adopt new tools and accelerate their efforts.

St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre

St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre (SJCCC) currently operates long-term care and complex continuing care settings in Cornwall, Ontario. In the spring of 2020, SJCCC submitted an application to the Ontario Ministry of Long Term Care to build a new long-term care facility. However, as the pandemic unfolded, senior leadership began to explore alternatives to a traditional LTC home model. This was partly inspired by a presentation by SE Health’s Housing for Health team that illuminated the prospects for mission-oriented healthcare delivery organizations to pursue affordable housing developments for older adults. With 1 - 2 acres of under-utilized land available and a good understanding of the needs of older adults in their community, SJCCC has both the real estate and expertise required to explore the feasibility of an affordable housing for seniors project. Covenant Care and Living

Covenant is a healthcare provider focusing on seniors care, mental health, palliative, and rural care. As an organization that has promoted the positive value that adequate housing offers, Covenant has reflected on different ways to build housing for the communities that they serve. The southeast campus in Edmonton, Alberta, which was formerly a community college site with structurally sound buildings, became a prospective site where a campus of care model could be employed. While different potential uses of the campus are identified, the idea is to commence redevelopment in a phased approach. The second phase will consist of an affordable housing development project, either by retrofitting an existing building or constructing a new building.

SE Health

SE Health is a 112 year old mission driven not-for-profit social enterprise working across Canada and internationally. The organization's mission is to positively impact how people live and age at home. SE Health delivers over 21,000 care exchanges in patients' homes each day, many of whom are older adults. The SE Futures team has been exploring opportunities to apply this knowledge of older adults and how they can best age in their home to new housing developments that serve lower and middle income seniors in need of both an affordable and supportive place in which to live.
