Think about 20 years ago and what the world was like, compared to today. Now, thinking about 20 years from now, what is one thing about your work related to health, aging, and housing for seniors that will be different?
Given what your work will look like in 20 years’ time, how optimistic are you for the state of health, aging, and housing for seniors across Canada in 2040? Why?
Please choose the top 3 trends that are most likely to shape the future of housing for seniors:
An Aging population: The proportion of older adults in our population is growing. Canadians are living and working longer, and retiring later in life.
Shift from provider-centric to patient-centric system: The health system and its policies are shifting to be centred around the needs and preferences of the patient, as opposed to the traditional approach that is more responsive to the needs and preferences of the provider.
Equity in access to care: Health care inequities exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic are being addressed through increased efforts by governments and private sector players to expand access to care for vulnerable and disproportionately impacted populations, so that all Canadians have a fair and equitable opportunity to reach their health potential regardless of social, economic, and environmental factors.
Use of AI for healthcare delivery: Advancements in artificial intelligence will lead to improvements in care delivery as well as patient engagement/ experience across the patient journey, including prevention, monitoring, care triage, diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment.
Supporting seniors to age in place through virtual care: Adoption of virtual care continues to grow amongst the seniors population (aged 65+) as a result of greater smartphone penetration, digital literacy, and policy directives that focus on using technology to support aging in place.
Rise of global health pandemics: Health systems across the globe are confronted with an increasing number of global pandemics and/ or drug-resistant bugs that impact how individuals live within national borders and travel abroad.
Integrated health networks: Large health networks comprised of hospitals, clinics, and other health providers span neighborhoods, cities and regions enabling increased financial gains, improved operational synergies and efficiencies, and increased patient reach and enhanced outcomes.
Entry of non-traditional players: Non-traditional health players leverage expertise from other sectors to disrupt and change the way Canadians receive health care, while also developing trust and collaboration with other health ecosystem players.
